Hey fellow Millennials! First off, I’m not a financial advisor just in case you are wondering. 😊
I’m just here to share some tried and tested “tipid” tips that I think would be valuable for you. This blog post is a bit different from what I usually write and I think it’s something worth sharing with people, especially to my fellow millennials who have big goals and dreams. Hopefully, these 3 Tipid Tips that I have discovered will be helpful in saving money and using it for our other needs. Let’s share this and spread awareness by being conscious as to where our money goes. Now, let’s go!
- Mineral/bottled water
Here’s a scenario: You walk in a mall buying stuff that you need or was asked to run an errand and you suddenly feel that dry lump on your throat and you say, “I’m thirsty!” I need water now. I’ll just buy water here in the nearest food kiosk.
Water is life. I get it. But where do we usually purchase water in scenarios like these? When you go to the mall do you purchase bottled water from kiosks? If your answer is yes let me give you a tipid tip on how you can buy mineral water for less. Go to the supermarket instead. They sell the same bottled water for a much cheaper price.
Here’s an example. Let’s say you bought mineral water from a food kiosk. Perhaps let’s say they sold it to you at 20 pesos. Okay, that’s cheap. Others might sell it at 25, 30, and at the most 50 pesos. Whereas if you buy it at the supermarket, you can buy it for as low as 12 – 14 pesos! So, the difference of 8 pesos is a huge amount that you can already save. More so if you compute its difference with 50 pesos. You can already use the difference for a jeepney ride back and forth. So, the next time you feel thirsty don’t be lazy and just go to the supermarket instead and get yourself a bottle or two of mineral water.
- Membership shopping
Have you heard of membership shopping? I won’t name one and I don’t have anything against them. They are doing great business and are supporting a lot of people. If you’re not aware of what membership shopping is, it’s like a supermarket that offers membership cards so that you can shop and buy their goods. Before you get yourself a membership shopping card I want you to ask these questions first: Do I need it? How often will I be using it? Is the yearly membership worth it?
Membership cards cost around 700 – 800 pesos. Imagine if let’s say you get a membership card that’s worth 800 pesos and you plan to renew it for ten years then that’s equivalent to 8,000 pesos. Now, what would I buy with 8,000? We can save this money already.
Once you get a membership card there’s a tendency for you to drop by and shop even if you don’t need anything because you would feel that the annual membership fee that you paid for is “sayang” (wasteful). What I would suggest is instead of having your own membership card ask someone else to have a card. Like for example in your family, not all of you need a card. It can be just one person and when you go shopping you buy stuff together. Or if you have a friend who has a card and both of you are planning to go to the membership shopping store then that is another option. So, should you get a membership shopping card? The decision is still up to you.
- Tipping at restaurants
I may sound evil but I am just being practical. If you are the type who tends to read through receipts after eating a hearty meal at a restaurant, I suggest that aside from looking at what you need to pay, how much is your change, or if the food that was jotted down is correct, I recommend that you also take a look if there is a service charge.
But why? Being aware of the service charge helps you make wise decisions for your money.
It helps you determine if you should give a tip or not. Simply, if there is a service charge and you really want to budget your money there is no need to give another extra tip. Now if the receipt doesn’t have a service charge it’s up to you if you want to leave a tip. Sometimes we see the service charge but we absentmindedly leave a tip. It has become an automatic thing for us. There is nothing wrong with generosity. I’m just giving tipid tips if you really want to manage your money well and save more.
There you have it! I know that we millennials are busy and sometimes we make rash decisions when we want to get things done and over with right away but we have to be vigilant with what we earn and what we spend because we worked hard for it remember? I hope these three tips will be useful for you in your everyday life!
Now, let me get a glass of water after writing this blog (water at home is cheaper 😊)
